PART 2 - LIVING UNDER NO CONDEMNATION IN CHRIST

LIVING UNDER NO CONDEMNATION IN CHRIST PART 2 - KATAKRINO VS ANAKRINO JUDGING or DISCERNING?

Recap from Part 1

Strong's #2631: KATAKRIMA (pronounced kat-ak'-ree-mah)

from 2632; an ADVERSE SENTENCE (the VERDICT):-CONDEMNATION.

To judge means: to separate, to pick out, select, choose.

By implication, it means to condemn, punish—avenge, conclude.

It also carries the idea of having discernment.

The passage where Jesus said, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (Matthew 7:1) goes on to show us how to have discernment.

ROMANS 2:1 NKJV

Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who JUDGE,

for in whatever you JUDGE (G2919 KRINO) another you CONDEMN (G2632 KATAKRINO) yourself;

for you who JUDGE (KRINO) practice the same things.

G2919 judge

Phonetic: kree'-no

Thayer Definition:

to separate, put asunder, to pick out, select, choose

to be of opinion, deem, think,

to determine, resolve, decree

to judge

Strong's Definition:  to DISTINGUISH, that is, DECIDE  (mentally or judicially); to try, condemn, punish:- avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the) law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.

G2632 condemn

Original: κατακρίνω

Transliteration: KATAKRINŌ

Phonetic: kat-ak-ree'-no

Thayer Definition:

to give judgment against,

to judge worthy of punishment

to condemn

Strong's Definition: From G2596 and G2919; to judge against,

ROMANS 2:1-2 TPT

No matter who you are, before you judge  (KRINO - DECIDE) the wickedness of others, you had better remember this:

you are also without excuse, for you too are GUILTY of the same kind of things!

When you JUDGE (KRINO) others, and then do the same things they do, you CONDEMN (KATAKRINO) yourself.

We know that GOD’S JUDGMENT (KRIMA) falls upon those who practice these things.

GOD is ALWAYS RIGHT, because HE HAS ALL the FACTS.

ROMANS 8:3 NKJV

For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin:

He CONDEMNED (G2632 KATAKRINO) sin in the flesh,

JUDGING or DISCERNING?

DISCERNMENT is the ability to obtain sharp perceptions (showing insight and understanding)

or to judge well (or the activity of so doing).

In the case of judgement, discernment can be psychological, moral, or aesthetic in nature.

Those who feel they are right, want to change the person to be right like them

There is a big difference between judging someone,

and discerning evil.

The two are not the same at all.

In the Bible, the word "judge" is often a woeful translation of the Greek word "KATAKRINO."

This word literally means "to JUDGE AGAINST."

In other words, it really means "TO CONDEMN."

But there is another Greek word, "KRINO," which is often

translated  "TO DISCERN."

"KRINO" literally means "TO SEPARATE."

It means "to separate the good from the bad."

These two words aptly show the contrast between judging someone, which God forbids, and discerning, which God desires.

"To judge" means to condemn.

It means to render a sentence against someone as if you are God.

And "to judge," the way

Jesus forbade it, is always a product of a bad attitude.

It stems from never having seen that you are as needy as the one whom you are condemning.

"To discern," however, carries NO desire to see someone

"get what is coming to them."

True discernment doesn't condemn at all.

It simply SEES things as they really are, WITH the MIND of CHRIST.

True discernment does not condemn bad at all. Jesus is the true discernment.

True discernment carries no blinders.

It sees evil.

And it confesses what it sees if the love of God dictates it.

The love of God would not avoid pointing out evil in society.

Jesus continually upbraided the Pharisees, yet He said He judged (condemned) no man.

I come by the blood of the Lamb

Jesus knew the difference between judging and discerning.

He always discerned.

He never judged.

Rather than be blind to evil, Christians will become more sensitive to it -- if they are getting closer to God.

Getting closer to God and developing His mind will not make us less sensitive to sin.

It will make us more sensitive to sin.

And it will give us the ability to discern things the way God discerns them -- clearly, but IN LOVE.

The book of Hebrews gives us a verse which tells us that it is God’s

will for us to discern the difference between good and evil:

HEBREWS 5:14 NKJV

But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is,

those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern

both good and evil.

3 senses, which one make decision or conclusion

It is a mark of Christian maturity to discern the difference

between good and evil.

It is also a greater mark of maturity, that having discerned that difference, to be able to stand in the love of God regarding it.

God wants us to discern.

But He tells us we must not condemn.

Good and evil is not that easy

Right and wrong is easier

Discernment -> Holy Spirit and the word of God

Understand Word of God more clearly and the word can help us to discern.

KRINO vs ANAKRINO

In Scripture there are two common words that are translated as “judge” ἀνακρίνω “anakrinō” and κρίνω “krinō” – the Greek prefix “ana” means upon or against, so krino happens first, followed by anakrino.

KRINO means judgment as to condemn, to rule, to damn,

to determine the law, to decree.

This is the word used in the phrase “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”

Matthew 7:1.

ANAKRINO means to examine or judge, to investigate,

examine, enquire into, scrutinise, sift, question

specifically in a forensic sense of a judge to hold an investigation

to interrogate, examine the accused or witnesses

to judge of, estimate, determine (the excellence or defects of any person or thing)

Anakrino means to examine, to reason, to search, to ask questions or to DISCERN.

1 CORINTHIANS 2:14 NKJV

But the natural man does not receive the THINGS of the SPIRIT of GOD, for they are foolishness to him;

nor can he know them, because they are SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED. (anakrinō)

1 CORINTHIANS 2:14 TPT

Someone living on an entirely human level rejects the revelations of God’s Spirit, for they make no sense to him.

He can’t understand the revelations of the Spirit because they are only discovered by the illumination of the Spirit.

1 CORINTHIANS 2:15 KJV

But he that is SPIRITUAL judgeth (anakrino)

all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

1 CORINTHIANS 2:15 TPT

Those who LIVE IN the SPIRIT are ABLE to CAREFULLY EVALUATE ALL things, and they are subject to the scrutiny of no one but God.

ACTS 17:11 TPT

They found that the Jews of Berea were of more noble character and much more open minded than those of Thessalonica.

They were HUNGRY to LEARN and EAGERLY RECEIVED the WORD.

EVERY DAY they OPENED the scrolls of Scripture to SEARCH and EXAMINE  (ANAKRINO) them, to verify that what Paul taught them was TRUE.

What we now know as “judgement” is krino.

What we now call “discernment” is anakrino.

JUDGEMENT is a FUNCTION of GOD; he makes the law,

he makes decrees and he decides what is right and wrong.

DISCERNMENT is a FUNCTION of HIS FOLLOWERS;

it’s a GIFT of the HOLY SPIRIT.

Discernment is a function of His followers

Discernment is different from Judgement in that it recognizes instruction from an external source and puts it into practice.

Eg.

When a cop pulls you over for speeding, do you say

“don’t you dare judge me!”

No, because you know that there are laws that he’s abiding by – he’s not making the judgement on what speed is dangerous – that was already done –

- he was merely doing his work as an officer of the peace; following the authority that has been placed over him.

God has already judged – now it is for us to discern what that judgement is and that only comes through the Holy Spirit.

Just as judgement is always wrong for us to do, discernment is never wrong.

Though, it can be carried out incorrectly; we are told that we must be gentle in our use of discernment.

GALATIANS 6:1 TPT

My beloved friends, if you see a believer who is overtaken with a fault, the ONE who is IN THE SPIRIT should seek to restore him in the Spirit of GENTLENESS.

But keep watch over your own heart so that you won’t be tempted to exalt yourself over him.

This is often when people call Christians judgmental.

Instead of being gentle, they are ungracious, condescending and ultimately un-Christ-like.

Gentleness is a key to the proper use of the gift that is discernment.

We’re not supposed to judge; we’re not supposed to make a call on what is wrong OR right based on our own internal moral code.

ROMANS 14:12-13 TPT

Therefore, each one must answer for himself and give a personal account of his own life before God.

So stop being critical and condemning of other believers, but instead determine to never deliberately cause a brother or sister to stumble and fall because of your actions.

ROMANS 14:17 TPT

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of rules about food and drink, but is in the realm of the Holy Spirit, filled with righteousness, peace, and joy.

1 JOHN 3:20 TPT

Whenever our hearts make us feel guilty and remind us of our failures, we know that God is much greater and more merciful than our conscience, and he knows everything there is to know about us.

JOHN 21:17 TPT

Then Jesus asked him again, “Peter, son of Jonah, do you have great affection for me?”

Peter was saddened by being asked the third time and said, “My Lord, you know everything.

You know that I burn with love for you!”

Jesus replied, “Then feed my lambs!

ROMANS 8:1 AMP

Therefore there is now NO CONDEMNATION (KATAKRIMA)

[no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].

MATTHEW 20:17-18

Jesus and his disciples were going towards Jerusalem.

As they walked along, Jesus took his 12 disciples away from the other people where he could SPEAK to THEM ALONE.

‘Listen!’ he said to them.

Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the SON of MAN shall be BETRAYED unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall CONDEMN (KATAKRINO) HIM to DEATH.

MATTHEW 20:19 EASY

Then they will take me and they will deliver me to people who are not Jews.

They will laugh at me.

They will hit me with whips.

Then they will kill me on a cross.

But after three days, I will become alive again.’

JOHN 3:17 TPT

“God did not send his Son into the world to judge and condemn (krino) the world, but to be its Savior and rescue it!

JOHN 3:17 EASY

God did not send his Son into the world because he wanted to punish people.

He sent his Son to save the people in the world from punishment.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:21 EASY

Christ never did any wrong thing, but God punished him as if he had.

He died as punishment for our sins.

As a result, we become right with God when we belong to Christ.

We become right, because he is right.

Jesus received the most unfairness in His life

He never did any wrong thing and yet God punished Him

We’re supposed to discern, with the guidance of the Spirit,

what God has already judged.

To do otherwise is to say you believe you’re smarter than the creator of the universe.

So give up your gavel to God and leave the judging up to Him,

but don’t neglect discernment; those with the SPIRIT can DISCERN all things.

Use the discernment not to judge or condemn, but to restore people

Start your spirit filled life in Christ
