LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - SESSION 5 THE MINDSET OF THE SPIRIT VS THE MINDSET OF THE FLESH
By obeying the law, you can never make the person good. Deep inside you are still sinful nature
The bible is about life and death. Bible knowledge is not about head knowledge
What we have is reality of relationship with God
God is spirit, we are spirit-being. We can talk to Him, joke with Him
ROMANS 8:3 NLT
The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.
So God did what the law could not do.
He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.
ROMANS 8:4 NLT
He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied FOR US, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
The problem now is this mind. The thoughts in this mind
We will have new body and live forever with God
It is by the power of the Holy Spirit. The holy spirit convict us to receive Jesus.
How do we renew our mind? It is from the spirit
We can choose to think
The body is the lowest level in our 3 parts being.
The spirit the mind, the soul area
ROMANS 8:5 NKJV
For those who live according to the flesh SET their MINDS on the things of the flesh,
but those who live according to the Spirit,
the things of the Spirit.
ROMANS 8:5 NLT
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature THINK ABOUT sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit THINK ABOUT things that please the Spirit.
We need to set this mind
ROMANS 8:5 EASY
Some people do what their weak human THOUGHTS want them to do.
They THINK ABOUT the things that will make THEMSELVES happy.
But people who live with God's Spirit as their guide THINK ABOUT what will make GOD'S SPIRIT happy.
Holy Spirit came to exalt the Word
ROMANS 8:5 TPT
Those who are motivated by the flesh only pursue what benefits THEMSELVES.
But those who live by the impulses of the Holy Spirit are motivated to pursue SPIRITUAL REALITIES.
Those who are in the flesh, see Him only in the flesh
Those who are in the spirit, see Him in the spirit
ROMANS 8:6 NKJV
For to be CARNALLY MINDED is DEATH,
but to be SPIRITUALLY MINDED is LIFE and PEACE.
ROMANS 8:6 NLT
So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.
But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
ROMANS 8:6 TPT
For the SENSE and REASON of the FLESH is DEATH,
but the MIND-SET CONTROLLED by the SPIRIT finds LIFE and PEACE.
ROMANS 8:6 AMPC
Now the MIND of the flesh [which is SENSE and REASON WITHOUT the HOLY SPIRIT] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter].
But the MIND of the [Holy] Spirit is LIFE and [soul] PEACE [both now and forever].
Put back God's word inside us
God keeps God's children alive through doctors until they build their faith
ROMANS 8:7 TPT
In fact, the mind-set focused on the flesh fights God’s plan and
refuses to submit to his direction, because it cannot!
ROMANS 8:7 AMPC
[That is] because the MIND of the FLESH [with its carnal thoughts and purposes]
is HOSTILE to GOD, for it does not submit itself to God's Law; indeed it cannot.
What is the one thing that can please God? Faith!
Without faith, it is impossible to please God
ROMANS 8:8 NIV
Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot
please God.
ROMANS 8:9 NKJV
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit,
if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
ROMANS 8:9 TPT
But when the Spirit of Christ empowers your life, you are not
dominated by the flesh but by the Spirit.
And if you are not joined to the Spirit of the Anointed One, you are not of him.
ROMANS 8:5-8 MSG
Those who THINK they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life.
Those who TRUST GOD’S ACTION in THEM find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God!
ROMANS 8:5-8 MSG
Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end;
attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious,
free life.
Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God.
Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God.
That person ignores who God is and what he is doing.
And God isn’t pleased at being ignored.
Carnal Mind
It's the mind that is SELF-WILLED, -
SELF-FOCUSED and SELF-SEEKING.
The carnal mind is devoid of the ability to surrender wholeheartedly to God.
Romans 8:5-9 makes it very clear that there are only two kinds of people in the world.
There are believers and unbelievers.
There are those who have been justified, and those who are condemned.
There are those who are according to the flesh, and those who are according to the Spirit.
There are those who have set their mind on the things of the flesh,
and there are those who have set their mind on the things of the Spirit.
It is very obvious that there is a black and white distinction in this passage.
Paul wants to be crystal clear that if you have been justified by faith, you will be sanctified.
There is no one who is justified by faith whose life is not dramatically changed.
Everyone who has escaped the condemnation of God has undergone a radical work of God in their personal life.
Paul lays out a clear contrast so that there is no confusion for his readers.
There is a back and forth in these verses between the two classes.
There is clearly not a third or fourth class, but only two.
Some say there are three classes of people.
First, those who are not Christians.
Second, those who are Christians.
And third, those who claim to be Christians but live like non-Christians.
Obviously, that is impossible.
No one who has been justified by faith will continue to live as they once did.
GALATIANS 5:16 NLT
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives.
Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
GALATIANS 5:17 NLT
The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what
the Spirit wants.
And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful
nature desires.
These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
GALATIANS 5:18 NLT
But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
GALATIANS 5:18 NKJV
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
