JEHOVAH EL BERITH -
THE LORD OUR GOD is a COVENANT-KEEPING GOD
Five main covenants that help us to understand the Bible and God's redemptive plan:
1. The Noahic Covenant,
2. The Abrahamic Covenant,
3. The Mosaic Covenant,
4. The Davidic Covenant and
5. The New Covenant.
GENESIS 6:12-13 AMP
God looked on the earth and saw how debased and degenerate it was, for all humanity had corrupted their way on the earth and LOST their TRUE DIRECTION.
God said to Noah, “I intend to make an end of all that lives, for through men the land is filled with violence; and behold, I am about to destroy them together with the land.
GENESIS 6:14-15 AMP
Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make in it rooms (stalls, pens, coops, nests, cages, compartments) and coat it inside and out with pitch (bitumen).
This is the way you are to make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits (450’ x 75’ x 45’).
GENESIS 6:16 AMP
You shall make a window [for light and ventilation] for the ark, and finish it to at least a cubit (eighteen inches) from the top—and set the [entry] door of the ark in its side; and you shall make it with lower, second and third decks.
GENESIS 6:17 AMP
For behold, I, even I, will bring a flood of waters on the earth, to destroy all life under the heavens in which there is the breath and spirit of life; everything that is on the land shall die.
GENESIS 6:18-19 AMP
But I will establish MY COVENANT (solemn promise, formal agreement) WITH YOU; and you shall come INTO THE ARK—you and your [three] sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
And of every living thing [found on land], you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
GENESIS 9:16-17 NKJV
The RAINBOW shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the EVERLASTING COVENANT between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
And God said to Noah, “This is the SIGN of the COVENANT which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
GENESIS 15:4-5 CEB
The LORD’s WORD came immediately to him, “This man will not be your heir. Your heir will definitely be your very own biological child.”
Then he brought Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars if you think you can count them.” He continued, “This is how many children you will have.”
GENESIS 15:6-7 CEB
Abram TRUSTED the LORD, and the LORD recognized Abram’s HIGH MORAL CHARACTER.
He said to Abram, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to GIVE YOU this LAND as your possession.”
GENESIS 15:8-9 CEB
But Abram said, “LORD God, how do I know that I will actually possess it?”
He said, “BRING ME a three-year-old female calf, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a dove, and a young pigeon.”
GENESIS 15:10-11 CEB
He took all of these animals, split them in half, and laid the halves facing each other, but he didn’t split the birds.
When vultures swooped down on the carcasses, Abram waved them off.
GENESIS 15:12-13 CEB
After the sun set, Abram SLEPT DEEPLY. A terrifying and deep darkness settled over him.
Then the LORD SAID to Abram, “Have no doubt that your descendants will live as immigrants in a land that isn’t their own, where they will be oppressed slaves for four hundred years.
GENESIS 15:14-16 CEB
But after I punish the nation they serve, they will leave it with great wealth.
As for you, you will join your ancestors in peace and be buried after a good long life.
The fourth generation will return here since the Amorites’ wrongdoing won’t have reached its peak until then.”
GENESIS 15:17 CEB
After the sun had set and darkness had deepened, a smoking vessel with a fiery flame passed between the split-open animals.
GENESIS 15:18-21 CEB
That day the LORD CUT a COVENANT with Abram:
“To your descendants I give this land, from Egypt’s river to the great Euphrates, together with the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
GENESIS 17:1-2 CEB
When Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I AM EL SHADDAI. Walk with me and be trustworthy.
I will make a COVENANT between US and I will GIVE you many, many descendants.”
GENESIS 17:3-6 CEB
Abram fell on his face, and God said to him, “But me, MY COVENANT is with YOU; you will be the ancestor of many nations. And BECAUSE I have made you the ancestor of many nations, YOUR NAME will no longer be Abram but Abraham.
I will make you very fertile. I will produce nations from you, and kings will come from you.
God made a covenant with Jesus while Abraham was sleeping.
A covenant has two sides.
GENESIS 17:10-11 CEB
This is MY COVENANT that you and your descendants must keep: CIRCUMCISE every male.
You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it will be a SYMBOL of the COVENANT between us.
We cannot remove our sin nature.
This is what religion is trying to do (try to be a good person, try to not sinned etc)
He has already cut off the flesh from us.
Old nature is gone already.
In ancient Near Eastern royal land grant treaties, this type of ritual was done to “SEAL” the PROMISES MADE.
Through this BLOOD COVENANT, God was confirming primarily three promises He had made to Abraham:
the promise of heirs (seed)
of land, and
of blessings
(Genesis 12:2-3).
The parties involved would WALK the PATH between the slaughtered animals so to say, “May this be done to me if I do not keep my oath.”
"When the sun goes down a smoking firepot and a torch pass through the carcases, acting out a COVENANT CEREMONY. So the Lord solemnly confirmed his promises to give land to Abram’s descendants.
GOD'S INSTRUCTIONS for building the ARK (chest) containing THE COVENANT.
EXODUS 25:1-2 CEB
The LORD said to Moses: Tell the Israelites to collect gift offerings FOR ME. Receive MY Gift Offerings from EVERYONE who FREELY WANTS TO GIVE.
EXODUS 25:1-2 AMP
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Tell the children of Israel to take an offering for Me. From every man whose HEART MOVES him [to GIVE WILLINGLY] you shall take MY OFFERING.
EXODUS 25:3-7 CEB
These are the gift offerings that you should receive from them:-
- gold, silver, and copper;
- blue, purple, and deep red yarns;
- fine linen; goats’ hair; rams’ skins dyed red;
- beaded leather;
- acacia wood;
- oil for the lamps;
- spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet-smelling incense; - - gemstones; and
- gems for setting in the priest’s vest and chest piece.
EXODUS 25:8-9 CEB
They should make ME a sanctuary so I can be present among them. You should follow the blueprints that I will show you for the dwelling and for all its equipment.
EXODUS 25:10-12 CEB
Have them make an acacia-wood chest. It should be forty-five inches long, twenty-seven inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high. Cover it with pure gold, inside and out, and make a gold molding all around it. Cast four gold rings for it and put them on its four feet, two rings on one side and two rings on the other.
EXODUS 25:13-15 CEB
Make acacia-wood poles and cover them with gold. Then put the poles into the rings on the chest’s sides and use them to carry the chest. The poles should stay in the chest’s rings. They shouldn’t be taken out of them.
EXODUS 25:16 CEB
Put the COVENANT DOCUMENT that I will give you into the chest.
EXODUS 25:17-18 CEB
Then make a cover of pure gold, forty-five inches long and twenty-seven inches wide. Make two winged heavenly creatures of hammered gold, one for each end of the cover.
EXODUS 25:19-20 CEB
Put one winged heavenly creature at one end and one winged heavenly creature at the other. Place the winged heavenly creatures at the cover’s two ends. The heavenly creatures should have their wings spread out above, shielding the cover with their wings. The winged heavenly creatures should face each other toward the cover’s center.
EXODUS 25:21-22 CEB
Put the gold cover on top of the chest and put the COVENANT DOCUMENT that I will give you inside the chest.
THERE I will MEET with YOU. From there above the cover, from between the two winged heavenly creatures that are on top of the chest containing THE COVENANT, I will deliver to you all that I command you concerning the Israelites.
EXODUS 25:22 AMP
THERE I will MEET with YOU; from ABOVE the MERCY SEAT, from between the two cherubim which are on the ARK of the TESTIMONY, I will SPEAK [INTIMATELY ] with YOU - regarding every commandment that I will give you for the Israelites.
H1285 covenant
Original: בּרית
Transliteration: berı̂yth
Phonetic: ber-eeth'
Strong's Definition: From H1262 (in the sense of CUTTING (like H1254); a COMPACT (because made by passing between pieces of flesh):- confederacy, [con]feder[-ate], covenant, league.
Warren Wiersbe - The Hebrew word translated “covenant”
has several meanings:
(1)to eat with, which suggests fellowship and agreement;
(2) to bind or fetter, which means commitment; and
(3) to allot, which suggests sharing.
When God makes a covenant, He enters into an agreement to
commit Himself to give what He promises. It is purely an act of grace.
ISBE says that "In essence a covenant is an agreement, but an agreement of a solemn and binding force. The early Semitic idea of a covenant was doubtless that which prevailed among the Arabs.
This was primarily blood-brotherhood, in which two men became brothers by drinking each other’s blood.
DEUTERONOMY 7:9 KJV
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which KEEPETH COVENANT and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
God never failed His covenant.
Covenant of mercy in Noah's time.
H8104 (keep)
Original: שׁמר
Transliteration: shâmar
Phonetic: shaw-mar'
-
to hedge about (as with thorns), that is, guard; to protect, attend to, etc.:- beware, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep (-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch (-man).
God is a God of covenant.
HEBREWS 6:13-18 MSG
When God made his promise to Abraham, he backed it all the way, putting his own reputation on the line.
He said, “I promise that I’ll bless you with everything I have—bless and bless and bless!”
Jesus dying on the cross is the guarantee.
Holy Spirit is the guarantor.
All He wants to do is to bless us.
This is God's heart.
HEBREWS 6:13-18 MSG
Abraham stuck it out and got everything that had been promised to him.
When people make promises, they GUARANTEE them by appeal to some AUTHORITY ABOVE THEM so that if there is any question that they’ll make good on the promise, the authority will BACK THEM UP.
HEBREWS 6:13-18 MSG
When God wanted to guarantee his promises, he gave his word, a rock-solid guarantee—God can’t break his word.
And because HIS WORD CANNOT CHANGE, the PROMISE is likewise UNCHANGEABLE.
HEBREWS 6:13-18 MSG
We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go.
It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the VERY PRESENCE of GOD where JESUS, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us, in the order of Melchizedek.
THE NEW COVENANT
JEREMIAH 31:33 CEB
No, this is the covenant that I will make with the people of Israel after that time, declares the LORD. I will put my Instructions within them and engrave them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
LUKE 22:20 NKJV
Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the NEW COVENANT in MY BLOOD, which is shed for you.
MATTHEW 26:28 TPT
For this is the blood that seals the NEW COVENANT. It will be POURED OUT for many for the COMPLETE FORGIVENESS of SINS.
G1242 covenant
Original: διαθήκη
Transliteration: diathēkē
Phonetic: dee-ath-ay'-kay
a disposition, arrangement, of any sort, which one wishes to be valid, the last disposition which one makes of his earthly possessions after his death, a testament or will
God's covenant with Noah, etc.
a contract (especially a devisory will)
Vine says this about the use of diatheke used in the Greek Septuagint to translate the Hebrew word Beriyth "The wholly gracious and effective character of God’s “covenant” is confirmed in the Septuagint by the choice of diatheke to translate berit/beriyth.
A diatheke is a will that distributes one’s property after death according to the owner’s wishes. It is completely unilateral.
GOD FULFILLED ALL HIS COVENANT PROMISES -
BY SENDING HIS SON JESUS CHRIST AS HIS GIFT TO REDEEM MAN FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW -
SO THAT ANYONE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM CAN NOW PARTAKE OF ALL HIS BLESSINGS.
INDEED HE IS OUR JEHOVAH EL BERITH - OUR COVENANT KEEPING GOD!
