UNDERSTANDING THE HEBREW WORD "EL SHADDAI" [Sermon Note]

Pastor Stephanie

ELOHIM is the powerful and strong one.

God has all authority.

Jesus himself chose to be on the cross to save all of us.

Jesus was sinless.

Only sin deserves death.

People in the books of Acts have authority.

When they speak "Be healed" and healing takes place.

Today, we have the staff, the cloak and the righteousness of God have become our authority.

The parent root for this word, Shaddai isשד (shad).

The (sh) is a picture of the two front teeth and has the meaning of “sharp,” “press” (as from chewing) as well as “two.”

The (d) is a picture of a tent door with a meaning of “hang” or “dangle” as the door is hung or dangles down from the top of the tent.

The combined meanings of these would be “two danglers.”

Other Bible scholars have said that, Shaddai is from the Hebrew root word, “Shad” meaning “breast”.

God can be seen as the “glue” that holds the whole universe together.

God literally “binds” the entire universe together.

“male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

This passage states that man was created as male and female and also that man was created in the image of God.

God has the characteristics of both male and female and these characteristics were put in man, the male characteristics were placed in men while the feminine characteristics were placed in women.

When a man and a woman come together, they unite these characteristics as one, now a perfect representation of God.

“and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 (NIV)

God promised the nation of Israel that he would bring them into a “land flowing with milk and honey.”

God as the אל שדיel (shaddai), the mighty teat, will supply his children with his life sustaining milk.

Our Heavenly Father is our supplier.

Let the God of peace guard our hearts and mind.

The ‘Aleph’ is the picture of an ox head and illustrates the strength of an animal.

It can mean strong, power, or leader.

The ‘Lamed’ is a picture of a shepherd’s staff.

The shepherd used the staff to exercise authority over the sheep to direct or lead them.

It can mean teach, lead, yoke, move forward, or authority.

The ‘Shin’ represents two front teeth and can mean sharp, eat, consume, separate, or destroy.

The ‘Dalet’ represents a tent flap or door.

It can also mean back and forth movement as in going in and out of a door.

The ‘Yud’ in pictograph form represents an arm and a hand. The picture can mean work, throw, worship or it can simply mean arm or hand.

The ‘Aleph’ and ‘Lamed’ form the root word ‘El’ which means God or strong controller.

The ‘Shin,’ ‘Dalet,’ and ‘Yud’ form another root ‘Shad’ meaning breast.

Together they reveal the ONE ALMIGHTY (MOST POWERFUL)

to NOURISH and SUPPLY ALL our NEEDS.
