UNDERSTANDING the HEBREW WORD, "SHEMA/SHAMA שׁמע" - [Sermon Note]

Pastor Deborah

God is always speaking, just that we are not hearing

Shema/Shama שָׁמַע is the 3-letter Hebrew Verb Root defined in English as To Hear, Listen, Take Heed, Harken, Comprehend, Obey…

The difference between our English understanding, and the original Hebrew, is - the HEARING is NOT SEPARATE from the ACTION of DOING:

The ancient Hebrew pictographs show us a figurative picture of Shemaשָׁמַע ; to Hear, Understand and Do:

Listen to obey

Hear, understand, do. All in one word, Shama

Sheen שָׁ = Teeth, Sharp, Press, Crush, Eat, Devour, Destroy, Crush, Remove, Consume, Fire…

Mem מַ = Water, Liquid, Blood,

a Massive amount, Chaos, Raging, Mighty, the Living Water, Messiah…

Ayin ע = Eye, See, Know, Experience, Perceive, Watch, Look, Appearance, Shade, Salvation…

Shem שֵׁם , is the Hebrew word for Name.

It is a sub-root within the Verb Root Shem-a, שָׁמַ-ע.

The Sheen שָׁ means to Destroy.

The Mem מ ַ represents both sides of the Water, Chaos and Life.

A Name Destroys – Chaos.

When Shemשָׁמַ is followed by the Ayin ע ; Eye, it becomes, the Name – Seen, or Perceived.

If we say we Know the Name of יְהוָֹה , *YHVH (He Is, He Was, He Shall Be) it will also be evident by our actions.

To Hear and Do, Shema שָׁמַע , the Voice of *YHVH is to Obey His Commandments and Statutes:

It is a joy to discover what the Lord wants to say to us

The Lord gives us life

so that our lives can be transformed and changed

DEUTERONOMY 27:10

You shall therefore Hear and Do (Shema שָׁמַע) the Voice

(קוֹל Qol) of יְהוִֹה , YHVH your God,

Doing (עָשָׂה Asah) His Commandments (מִצְוָה Mitzvah)

and His Statutes (חֹק CHoq), which I Command you today.”

GENESIS 3:8 KJV

And they HEARD the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

In the presence of the Lord, God speaks

Hear and obey, otherwise, nothing happen. It will be just head knowledge.

DEUTERONOMY 6:4-5 NKJV

The Lord our God, the Lord is one!

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

God wants us to enjoy a land that is flowing with milk and honey.

God's heart is for us to love Him in return.

DEUTERONOMY 6:6-7 NKJV

“And these WORDS which I command you today shall be in your HEART.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

DEUTERONOMY 6:10-11 EASY

The Lord your God will soon bring you into a land that has large, beautiful cities that you did not build.

That is the land that he promised to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

It has houses that are FULL of GOOD THINGS that you did not put into them.

There are wells of water that YOU DID NOT DIG.

There are fields with grapes and olive trees that YOU DID NOT PLANT.

You will be able to eat AS MUCH AS YOU WANT.

No more work for devil.

1 KINGS 3:4-5 KJV

And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.

In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night:

and God said,

Ask what I shall give thee.

God will reveal to you He is the God who wants to give you

Think..God is asking us..what shall I give you

What did Solomon say?

1 KINGS 3:6-7 AMP

Then Solomon said, “You have shown Your servant David my father great lovingkindness, because he walked before You in faithfulness and righteousness and with uprightness of HEART toward You; and You have kept for him this great lovingkindness, in that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today.

So now, O LORD MY GOD,

YOU have MADE YOUR SERVANT KING in place of David my father;

and as for me, I am but a little boy [in wisdom and experience]; I do not know how to go out or come in [that is, how to conduct business as a king].

He put Himself as God's servant.

King Soloman said I don't know and I need to learn how to be a king. How to conduct business as a king.

Many of us said I know.

Acknowledge God as your Master.

1 KINGS 3:9 AMP

So give YOUR SERVANT an UNDERSTANDING MIND and a HEARING HEART

[H8085 Shama - "hear to obey" Heart (innerman)]

[with which] to judge Your people, so that I may DISCERN between good and evil.

For who is able to judge and rule this great people of Yours?”

What Solomon asked pleased the Lord

1 KINGS 3:10-11 AMP

Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing.

God said to him, “Because you have asked this and have not asked for yourself a long life nor for wealth, nor for the lives of your enemies,

but have asked for yourself understanding to recognize justice,

1 KINGS 3:12 AMP

BEHOLD, I have done as you asked.

I have given you a wise and discerning heart (mind), so that no one before you was your equal, nor shall anyone equal to you arise after you.

1 KINGS 3:13 AMP

I have also given you WHAT YOU HAVE NOT ASKED, both wealth and honor, so that there will not be anyone equal to you among the kings, for all your days.

Solomon did not ask for wealth and honor.

1 KINGS 3:14 AMP

If you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and My commandments, as your father David did, then I will lengthen your days.”

1 KINGS 3:15 AMP

Then Solomon awoke, and he realized that it was a dream.

He came [back] to Jerusalem and STOOD BEFORE the ARK of the COVENANT of the LORD;

he OFFERED burnt offerings and peace offerings, and he prepared a feast for all his servants.

It was never meant to become like Solomon in terms of money

Solomon asked God for a "SHAMA / SHEMA שׁמע Hearing to Obey"

HEART לב lêb

Listen to the Word of God carefully. Everything that you hear to obey.

LUKE 11:28 TPT

“Yes,” said Jesus, “but God will bless all who LISTEN to the WORD of GOD and CAREFULLY OBEY EVERYTHING they HEAR.”

JAMES 1:22-24 MSG

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other.

Act on what you hear!

Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.

JAMES 1:25 MSG

But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of ACTION.

That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

Scatterbrain...you are called here and there, and you are scattered.

Scatterbrain scatter all over the place

First we need to follow as a sheep, hear the shepherd's voice

JAMES 1:25 AMP

But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favored by God in what he does [in his life of obedience].

JOHN 10:1-2 EASY

Jesus then said, ‘I tell you this:

A shepherd keeps his sheep in a safe place with a wall round it.

There is a gate into that safe place.

Anyone who gets into that place by another way, not through

the gate, is not the shepherd.

That person is a robber.

He comes to take away the sheep for himself.

But the shepherd goes in through the gate.

JOHN 10:3 NKJV

To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep HEAR HIS VOICE; and he calls his own sheep by NAME and LEADS them out.

GENESIS 22:18

And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be Blessed, because you have HEARD and OBEYED (Shema שָׁמַע ) My Voice (קוֹל Qol),”

GENESIS 26:1-2 NKJV

There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham.

And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.

Then the Lord appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.

GENESIS 26:3-4 NKJV

Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

I will give you a NEW HEART and put a NEW SPIRIT within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

1 PETER 3:3-4 AMP

Your adornment must not be merely external—with interweaving and elaborate knotting of the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or [being superficially preoccupied with] dressing in expensive clothes;

but let it be [the inner beauty of] the HIDDEN PERSON of the HEART,

with the imperishable quality and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, [one that is calm and self-controlled, not overanxious, but serene and spiritually mature] which is very precious in the sight of God.

Grow more and more beautiful hearing the Lord
