UNDERSTANDING the HEBREW WORD, "YADAHידה and TODAH תּודה"

Pastor Stephanie

Yadah appears 111 times in the Bible, and it means:

To REVERE or WORSHIP with EXTENDED HANDS

To ACKNOWLEDGE, PRAISE, or GIVE THANKS

To LIFT HANDS

There are 7 different words for praise in Hebrew: halal, yadah, todah, shabach, barak, zamar, and tehillah.

H3034

Original: ידה

Transliteration: yâdâh

Phonetic: yaw-daw'

Strong's Definition:

to use (that is, hold out) the hand;

- to throw (a stone, an arrow) at or away;

- to revere or worship (with extended hands);

- to bemoan (by wringing the hands):- cast (out), (make) confess (-ion), praise, shoot, (give) thank (-ful, -s, -sgiving).

YADAH - pronounced "Yaw-daw" (Hands to God).

The Hebrew word YADAH comes from two root words.

‘Yad,’ which means the open hands posture, direction and power,

and ‘ah,’ from God’s name, Jehovah.

Basically, ‘yadah’ is RESPONDING to GOD by LIFTING our HANDS in PRAISE.

Together they are rendered HANDS to GOD.

It carries the meaning of ABSOLUTE SURRENDER as a child does to a parent - "pick me up, I'm all yours."

Lord take me, I am yours! Surround to God

We are praising God while surrendering to Him

A child will respond to a loving father and mother

When we get beyond our circumstances, beyond our selves, reaching HANDS UP to the FATHER with the attitude of love, trust and awe, then we are giving YADAH to the LORD.

Short definition - THANKS to GOD.

Our hands are an extension of our inward nature.

IF aggressiveness is inside a person, he uses his hands to hit people.

If one chooses to LIFT UP their HANDS it is an expression of a deep surrender to God and it is an extension of our hearts desiring to exalt Him.

PSALMS 9:1 TPT

I will worship you, Yahweh, with EXTENDED HANDS as my WHOLE HEART erupts with PRAISE!

I will tell everyone everywhere about your wonderful works!

YADAH is a verb with a root meaning, "the EXTENDED HAND,

to throw out the hand,

therefore to WORSHIP with EXTENDED HAND."

The opposite meaning is "to bemoan, the wringing of the hands."

YADAH is the ACTION of RAISING our HANDS in praise and worship when we're in church, in the car, in our homes or whenever we may be worshiping God.

How often do we watch our favorite football team on tv and have no problem lifting UP our hands when our team scores a touchdown or kicks a field goal??

But when we're in church some of us can barely get our hands out

of our pockets.

I can not sit on my hands and not allow myself to raise my hands as

I am so THANKFUL for all the MERCY God has shown me.

It signifies two things:

One, we love God and we're unashamed to worship him.

Two, it's a sign of surrender to Him as Lord of our lives.

The raising of hands is YADAH to the Lord.

Jesus was never ashamed of us, why are we ashame?

Jesus is our success

God protects us. That Psalm 91 was written by David when he was in the situation where the enemies are looking to kill to him

Thanks the Lord for whatever you are thanking Him. You can praise and thank God every time and every where

That is why, when we worship God and praise Him, we feel the urge to raise our hands and lift them to Him.

Even though no one has taught us about these things, our spirits and bodies naturally know how to respond to God in praise.

When the Israelites were in a war against the Amalekites in Exodus 17, Moses positioned himself on a hill overlooking the battle.

He would RAISE his HANDS, and the Israelites were WINNING.

But when he would LOWER them, the Amalekites were prevailing.

So Aaron and Hur supported Moses by helping him raise his hands.

Moses’ gesture was significant.

His simple act of raising his hands in worship and praise to God won them

the victory.

In the same way, simply raising our hands is a form of praise to God.

Praising God does not mean we have to shout or scream all the time.

The very act of lifting our hands is equally pleasing as praise to God.

So we can praise God anytime and anywhere just by lifting our hands to Him.

Yadah praise is one in which we raise our hands in an outburst of SPONTANEOUS GRATITUDE for what GOD HAS DONE.

Our HANDS are used as an extension of our EXPRESSION of THANKS.

One may also express thankful praise on a musical instrument.

in heaven is all music and worship

Yadah HONOURS and ACKNOWLEDGES GOD'S HAND and PURPOSE over our lives and may be expressed vocally and with musical instruments.

Our bodies become an extension of the expression of our hearts.

In Yadah, you give thanksgiving for ALL you HAVE; knowing that God is able!

Hallelujah!

There is a root word that comes from Yadah; which is Todah.

The Hebrew word for thanks is " TODAH תּוֹדָה "

It comes from the root י-ד-ה) ), from which we get the verb להודות)), meaning to “acknowledge,” “to admit,” and “to thank.”

Thanksgiving is the Hebrew Noun, תּוֹדָה Todah.

It is derived from the Primitive 3-letter Verb Root, יָדָה Yadah, meaning to Cast, Throw, Confess, or Give Thanks.

Every words have meaning.

H8426 thanksgiving

Original: תּודה

Transliteration: tôdâh

Phonetic: to-daw'

Strong's Definition: From H3034; properly an extension of the hand, that is, avowal, or adoration;

specifically a choir of worshippers:- confession, (sacrifice of) praise, thanks (-giving, offering).

Thanks in advance, meaning not yet receive, we thank the Lord

The word TODAH is the THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE you DO to show how THANKFUL you are.

Todah means “to EXTEND the HAND in adoration, avowal,

or acceptance.”

It means “to worship the Lord and to THANK HIM for things NOT YET RECEIVED as well as for things already at hand.”

PSALMS 50:14 TPT

Why don’t you bring me the sacrifices I desire?

Bring me your TRUE and SINCERE THANKS,

and SHOW your GRATITUDE by KEEPING your promises to me, the Most High.

Experience the joy of giving

Get out of fear of death and depending on money by trusting God

You not yet see but you believe. Like a title deed.

Tithing and offering is to thank Him, not to atone for our sins

PSALMS 50:23 TPT

The life that pleases me is a LIFE LIVED in the GRATITUDE of GRACE,

always choosing to walk with me in what is right.

This is the SACRIFICE I desire from you.

If you do this, more of my salvation will unfold for you.”

PSALMS 50:23 MSG

“It’s the PRAISING LIFE that honors me.

As soon as you set your foot on the Way,

I’ll show you my salvation.”

The PRAISING LIFE

God wants His children to honor Him by faith.

If you cannot trust him, you will not believe him, and definetely not adore Him.

Praising Him for future events?

TODAH, a SACRIFICE of PRAISE!

Todah, we lift our hands, as a sacrificial offering for FUTURE THINGS that are UNSEEN.

PSALMS 26:6-7 TPT

When I come to your altar, Yahweh, I’ll be clean before you, approaching with songs of thanksgiving [Todah], singing songs of your mighty miracles.

David offered his voice in thanksgiving.

It’s what he had to GIVE to SHOW his thankfulness.

Praise Him for His goodness

Sometimes it’s just a STATEMENT of AN ACTION to COME:

PSALMS 116:16-19

Truly, O YHWH, I am Your servant; I am Your servant,

the son of Your maidservant; You have released my bonds.

I will offer to You a SACRIFICE of THANKSGIVING [tsebah todah] and call on the name of YHWH.

PSALMS 116:16-19

I will FULFILL my VOWS to YHWH in the presence of all His people,

in the courts of YHWH’s house, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Hallelujah!

Here the Psalmist promised to OFFER a SACRIFICE of THANKSGIVING.

His sacrifice would be to fulfill his vows to YHWH in front of all the people.

The hesitant prophet, Jonah, came to the same conclusion. Thanksgiving was a sacrifice.

It was fulfilling the personal vows you made to God.

JONAH 2:6b-9

But You raised my life from the pit, O YHWH my God!

As my life was fading away, I remembered YHWH.

My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.

Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.

But I, with the voice of thanksgiving [todah], will sacrifice to You.

I will fulfill what I have vowed.

Salvation is from YHWH!”

In every born again believers heart we love God. All we need to do is to response.

Behold the hand, behold the nail.

God use our weakness

Let us all be available for the Lord to use us.

FULFILLING the VOWS you made to God was a SACRIFICE

of thanksgiving.

But what vows have you made?

Certain vows are recited multiple times, everyday, by practising Jewish people.

It is the Shema Prayer, taken from the Torah:

DEUTERONOMY 6:4-5

Hear, O Israel: YHWH our God, YHWH is One.

And you shall love YHWH your God with all your heart and with all

your soul and with all your strength.

Fulfilling this vow is a sacrifice.

It is not easy.

It takes effort.

Fulfilling this vow is the ultimate way to show thanksgiving to God.

When you love God this much, with your full heart, with the

entirety of your being, with every fibre of your body, then you will be just the kind of person this world needs.

When your foundation is loving God first, then what pours out of you is genuine LOVE for all creatures, big and small.

This is the sacrifice of thanksgiving that YHWH requires.

You minister because of God's love

When you love God this much, with your full heart, with the

entirety of your being, with every fibre of your body, then you will be just the kind of person this world needs.

When your foundation is loving God first, then what pours out of you is genuine LOVE for all creatures, big and small.

This is the sacrifice of thanksgiving that YHWH requires.

The blessing of wholeness

LUKE 17:17-19 EASY

Then Jesus said, ‘I made ten men well again, didn't I?

There should be another nine men somewhere!

But only this one man CAME BACK to THANK God.

And he is a foreign man from Samaria!’

LUKE 17:17-19 EASY

Then Jesus spoke to the man. ‘Stand up and go on your way.

You believed in me, so now you are really well.’

As he worshipped Jesus, Jesus blessed the former leper and declared

him whole.

Although the nine other lepers received healing, they did not receive the blessing of wholeness, unlike the one who offered todah.

So, when we offer our thanks to God, we are praising Him and at the same time receive His blessing.

In Psalm 95:2, “Let us come before HIS PRESENCE with THANKSGIVING (TODAH), and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.”

Wherever you are, He is with you

An attitude of thanking God

Todah - PRAISING GOD IN ADVANCE

“TODAH,”which means to speak with a loud voice, an extension of the hand.

Thanksgiving, a sacrifice of praise, including the lifting of hands inviting God to help.

But it also has the idea of GRATITUDE in it.

It is an ATTITUDE OF THANKING GOD FOR HIS PROMISE FOR DELIVERANCE EVEN WHILE STILL IN NEED, BEFORE IT HAPPENS.

It is used for THANKING GOD for “THINGS NOT YET RECEIVED”

as well as things already at hand.

It is anticipation.

It is looking to Him for what He has ahead!

Praise and faith in Assurance in advance of the victory!

Praising God with gratitude before we see the deliverance!

With God is always believe first than receive

It’s not “blind faith” but hope, faith in WHO God is.

David expressed this when he was trapped in Gath by the Philistines and he offers “TODAH PRAISE” to God before He delivers him!

When they shout with worshippers, the wall come down. Praise Him!

Acknowledge He is the One, He is the Source

He sent the deliverance

In God i will put my trust. What can God do to me

Honour and trust Him

To be a leader, and a real shepherd with God's heart

Confidence in His character and leads to praise and Trust in His power, heart, to deliver, even BEFORE it happens!

It is to PRAISE in ADVANCE.

To look with confident trust to Him!

It is to offer Praise and Trust that God will deliver before it happens!

How wonderful is God.

So often we can “Praise the LORD” after something “good” happens, but here is reason to Praise Him BEFORE something happens!

The one who can praise God before something happen

“Todah – Confession, praise, thanksgiving sacrifice - a sacrifice

BEFORE the deliverance happens.

Psalm 50:14 – “Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving {Todah} and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

– it implies and emphasizes a sacrifice… but not just any

sacrifice- a sacrifice before the deliverance happens.

You are different, you have a heavenly Father

TODAH - The SACRIFICE of THANKSGIVING

The todah was one of the most significant sacrifices of the Jews.

Indeed, an old rabbinic teaching says: the coming Messianic age all sacrifices will cease, but the thanksgiving offering [todah] will never cease.

What is it about this sacrifice that makes it stand alone in such a way that it would outlast all other sacrifices after the redemption of the Messiah?

“A todah sacrifice would be offered by someone whose life had been delivered from great peril, such as disease or the sword.

The redeemed person would show his gratitude to God by gathering his closest friends and family for a todah sacrificial meal.

The lamb would be sacrificed in the Temple and the bread for the meal would be consecrated the moment the lamb was sacrificed.

The bread and meat, along with wine, would constitute the elements of the sacred todah meal, which would be accompanied by prayers and songs of thanksgiving, such as Psalm 116.”

PSALMS 121:1-3 TPT

OUR HELP COMES FROM THE LORD;

Christmas should be thanksgiving

I look up to the mountains and hills, longing for God’s help.

But then I realize that our true help and protection is only from the Lord, our Creator who made the heavens and the earth.

He will guard and guide me, never letting me stumble or fall.

God is my keeper; he will never forget nor ignore me.

Our help comes from Him

He is my Keeper and never forget us

PSALMS 20:7 TPT

Some find their strength in their weapons and wisdom,

but my miracle-deliverance can never be won by men.

Our boast is in Yahweh our God, who makes us strong and gives us victory!

David offered this word for praise many times in his trials.

We may not know all that is going on in our times of difficulties but we offer praise, thanksgiving to Him for His deliverance IN ADVANCE.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:18-19 TPT

And in the MIDST of EVERYTHING be ALWAYS GIVING THANKS,

for this is God’s perfect plan for you in Christ Jesus.

Never restrain or put out the fire of the Holy Spirit.

Gift will not be taken away from you.

Only Jesus has all those fruits. Fruits of the holy spirit

He will fulfil His promises

TODAH -

PRAISING & THANKING GOD WITH SACRIFICES -

IN ADVANCE

IN EXPECTATION!

COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 EASY

You have accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord.

So remember that you belong to him as you live your lives.

Get your strength from Christ himself, so that you become stronger

and stronger.

Continue to believe the true message that we taught you.

And THANK GOD VERY MUCH for EVERYTHING.

When we lift up our hands, we are saying all glory to Jesus

the Hebrew word for extending our arms and hands towards God

Each hand is written the name of Jesus

We give Him the sacrifice of thanksgiving
