UNDERSTANDING the HEBREW WORDS, "RA’AH רָאָה" and " CHAZZAH חָזָה" - [Sermon Note]

Pastor Deborah

There’s a difference between looking, and really seeing.

In Hebrew there are two very separate words to differentiate between casually viewing something and really perceiving what you are looking at:

Ra’ah (רָאָה) is to generically see.

Chazzah (חָזָה) is to perceptively see.

Chazah.

It's a Hebrew word pronounced: Kaw-zaw.

It is a verb.

The meaning = Behold, envisioned in visions, to gaze, to look.

Chazah is an ancient word that was first made up of symbols before it was written in letters.

Seeing ear or hearing eye

Do you need Jesus the way you need water to live?

The Psalms specifically attributed to David's play with the two words, Raah and Chazzah a lot:

A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah:

PSALMS 63:1 EASY

God, you are my God.

I want to be near to you.

I need you to give me life, like a thirsty person

in a dry desert.

As a person needs water to live, that is how I need you.

PSALMS 63:2 EASY

When I have gone into your temple,

I have seen what you are like.

I have seen your great power and your glory.

PSALMS 63:2 KJV

To SEE (RAAH) thy power and thy glory,

so as I have SEEN (CHAZZAH) thee in the sanctuary.

Chazzah is to see who?

Chazzah is to see God

See the work of God or to see God?

Perception

Perceive

The Word of knowledge can flow

See Him in His holiness

PSALMS 63:2 KJV

To SEE thy power and thy glory, so as I have SEEN thee in the sanctuary.

H6944 sanctuary

Original: קדשׁ

Transliteration: qôdesh

Phonetic: ko'-desh

Strong's Definition: From H6942; a sacred place or thing; rarely abstractly sanctity:- consecrated (thing), dedicated (thing), hallowed (thing), holiness, (X most) holy (X day, portion, thing), saint, sanctuary.

David sought out God in the Sanctuary.

And he went there to try and get a glimpse [raah] of YHWH’s power and glory.

The result, according to David, was that he truly SAW GOD there!

YHWH makes this point continually:

We are to seek His face… not just for a passing glimpse, but to truly SEE HIM … to experience HIM and PERCEIVE HIS INTENTIONS.

Open my eyes to see. Let me hear You speaking through the speaker.

In the Torah, Balaam, a non-Israelite who was, essentially, coerced into being a prophet, LOOKED and REALLY SAW YHWH:

NUMBERS 24:1-4

When Balaam saw that it pleased YHWH to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times to seek omens but he set his face toward the wilderness.

And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

NUMBERS 24:1-2 EASY

Balaam REALIZED that the Lord WANTED to BLESS the Israelites.

So he did not use magic again to find out what the Lord wanted him to do. Instead, he LOOKED TOWARDS the DESERT.

WHEN he LOOKED, he SAW the Israelite people.

They had put up their tents in groups for each tribe.

THEN the Spirit of God came on him.

NUMBERS 24:3 EASY

AS A RESULT, Balaam said, ‘This is God's message that he has given to Balaam, the son of Beor.

It is the words of a man WHO UNDERSTANDS WHAT GOD is SAYING.

Message of a man who hears God's Word.

I am a man who sees.

When you speak, you speak with confidence.

NUMBERS 24:4 EASY

It is the message of a man who HEARS GOD'S WORDS.

I am a man who SEES (CHAZZAH) a VISION (MACHĂZEH)

that GOD ALMIGHTY has shown to him.

I lie down on the ground, but MY EYES are OPEN!

I SEE THIS:

Spiritual eyes need to be open.

NUMBERS 24:5-6 EASY

The TENTS where the Israelites live are BEAUTIFUL!

They are LIKE GREEN GARDENS in a valley beside a RIVER.

They are LIKE TALL TREES that the LORD HAS PUT THERE.

They are LIKE CEDAR TREES that GROW beside water.

Physically he did not see, because he said they are like

This is seeing in the spirit.

We don't speak is because we don't see.

Physically we see first than we speak.

NUMBERS 24:7-8 EASY

GOD WILL GIVE THEM PLENTY of rain.

Their descendants will always have PLENTY of water.

Their king will be MORE POWERFUL than Agag.

Their kingdom will be GREAT .

GOD BROUGHT them OUT of Egypt.

GOD FIGHTS FOR them like a wild bull.

He will destroy the nations who are their enemies.

He will break their enemies' bones into pieces.

He will shoot his arrows at them.

NUMBERS 24:9 EASY

The Israelites are LIKE a LION.

When it is asleep, nobody is brave enough to wake it.

GOD BLESSES THOSE WHO BLESS you, ISRAEL.

And those who curse you are truly cursed.’

NUMBERS 24:10-12 EASY

When Balaam said that, Balak became very angry with him.

He hit his hands together and he said to Balaam, ‘I asked you to come here and to curse my enemies, the Israelites.

But you have blessed them three times!

So go home now.

I said that I would pay you very well.

But the Lord has stopped me from giving you anything.’

Balaam said to Balak, ‘I already said this to the men that you sent to bring me.

NUMBERS 24:13-14 EASY

I told them, “I can only speak the message that the Lord tells me.

I cannot do good things or bad things just because I want to do them.

Even if Balak gives his palace full of silver and gold to me, I cannot do anything different.

I have to obey the Lord's command.”

So I will now return to my own people.

But listen!

Before I go, I will tell you what these Israelites will do to your people in the future.’

He has committed himself fully to the Lord.

Keep learning God's Word and God's will.

God said your future is bright, why are you saying your future is not good?

The word for vision, CHAZON (Strong’s 2384) comes from the same root word chazzah.

Visions from YHWH were really SEEING and really PERCEIVING GOD’S PLAN.

It was the big “A-ha” moment, the “OHHHH, NOW I GET IT!” response.

The laws of understanding is so terrible these days

Now I see Him! Vision, revelation.

At least three of the prophetic books start off with an announcement about a VISION or DIVINE SEEING:

ISAIAH 1:1 KJV

The VISION (CHÂZÔN) of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

The prophet starts with a vision, CHÂZÔN

When a person starts living a life with God, he starts to see vision. Your spirit sees.

You see finally your life has no purpose except to live for God.

A prophet needs to be a shepherd as well.

Go deep into God.

H2377 vision

Original: חזון

Transliteration: châzôn

Phonetic: khaw-zone'

BDB Definition:

vision

vision (in ecstatic state)

vision (in night)

vision, oracle, prophecy (divine communication)

Strong's Definition: From H2372; a sight (mentally), that is, a dream, revelation, or oracle:- vision.

AMOS 1:1

The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he SAW [CHAZZAH] concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

MICAH 1:1

The word of YHWH which came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he SAW [chazzah] concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

SEEING GOD.

BEHOLDING HIS FACE

PSALMS 11:7 KJV

For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold (Chazzah) the upright.

PSALMS 11:7 TPT

But remember this: Yahweh is the Righteous One who loves justice,

and EVERY GODLY one will GAZE upon HIS FACE!

We can see and hear Him and gaze upon His face.

Eyes of love, words of comfort

This relationship face.

This relationship-based God WANTS to interact with us.

He wants to INSTRUCT us as a Great Teacher;

He WANTS to GUIDE us a a Great Father;

and He WANTS  US  to SEEK HIS FACE.

Our God is a God who wants relationship.

He wants to instruct us as a Great Teacher.

Holy Spirit is our Teacher.

Holy Spirit knows all things.

PSALMS 17:14-15 TPT

Throw them down to the ground, those who LIVE for ONLY THIS LIFE on EARTH.

Thrust them out of their prosperity and into their portion in eternity, leaving their wealth and wickedness behind!

As for me, because I am innocent, I will SEE (Chazzah) your face until I SEE you for who you really are.

I will be satisfied in an awakening of your likeness in me!

This hope of really SEEING YHWH was IMPORTANT to David.

It was the ONE THING he REALLY WANTED.

Are you persistent in seeking God? Or limiting God in 5 mins to speak to us?

I want to see You for who You really are.

In the spiritual realm is Word and Spirit.

PSALMS 27:4 (PSALM OF DAVID)

One thing I have asked from YHWH, that I shall seek:

That I may dwell in the house of YHWH all the days of my life,

To behold [la-chazzot] the beauty of YHWH

And to meditate in His temple.

David said he rather be a door keeper in the house of his God than in other places.

God sees our hearts.

CHAZAH  - A PROPHECY

Cheth Zayin Hei

“Job 27:12: “Behold, all of you yourselves have seen (it), why then are you altogether vain?”

“If the judge should say to the man, ‘Take the splinter from between your eye.’

He would reply: ‘Take the beam from your between your eye.’”

Talmud  Baba Bathra 15b.

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in they brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in your own eye.”

Matthew 7:3

Job 27:12 can be pretty difficult to understand in our modern translations.

To paraphrase what Job is saying to his friends is: “It’s as plain as the nose on your face.”

Job’s friends, like all of us were good church people who love to give advice to someone who was facing some spiritual struggle.

If someone shares with you a spiritual crisis what are you going to say?

Maybe there are times you have some answer, most of the time you don’t, other than the common sound bites like: “Just trust God,”

“Pray about it, “or “God is faithful.”

Chances are you don’t have an answer that this person has not heard a hundred times or more.

Are you going to say the truth: “Hey, I really don’t know what to tell you.”

Odds are you are not.

You will search your brain for some answer that sounds good because, of course, you want to be a hero or you just plain don’t want anyone to think you are not a spiritual person.

It cannot be said for sure but probably Job’s friends did not have an answer for Job’s suffering and they knew it.

But like most Christians, they will speak the party line or quote their favorite preacher and only make matters worse.

Everyone is waiting for the opportunity to share the depths of their wisdom and knowledge.

We all like to think we’ve cornered the market on truth.

Job’s friend was no exception and after hitting Job with all their wonderful words of wisdom, Job responds by asking: “What, are you altogether vain?”

Literally from the Hebrew, he is saying: “You all perceive (and what happens?)

This vanity becomes your vanity.”

The word in the Hebrew for perceive is very interesting to those in the prophetic movement.

It comes from the root word CHAZAH  which means a vision, deep spiritual insight, or a prophecy.

To put it in terms that are easily understood in today’s language what Job is saying is: “You have a prophetic word.

You have word from God.”

But what happens?

“This vanity becomes your vanity.”

The word vanity is haval which means a vapor, mist, or fog.

This creates a double meaning for the word and this word is repeated two times in the text.

This repetition is meant for the two words to play off of each other and create a play on that double meaning.

It is not clear, blur like sotong.

Trying to be smart.

Something being a vapor, mist, or fog is not clearly defined.

A prophecy or vision is often in symbols and its meaning is not readily apparent, it is like a mist or fog.

Thus one use of the word haval is for something that is not clear or readily apparent.

The second use of the word spelled with a Sere’ rather than a Pathah is havel is used to express foolishness and uselessness.

Just as fog or vapor seems to have substance, but when you walk into it, it doesn’t have the substance that it appears to have from a distance.

Thus, Job is saying: “You have a prophetic word, but it lacks clarity and is useless and has made you foolish.

How has it made his friends foolish?

When you look at the word haval, its built-in commentary you discover how.

The word is spelled Hei, Beth, and Lamed.

The Hei represents self-deception.

Couple this with the next letter the Beth you have the expression of feeling spiritually superior to others and then finally the Lamed which in its shadow represents self-importance.

Thus the word haval gives a good description of Job’s friends.

They were deceived by their feelings of superiority and self-importance and it ended up making the word they had from God into foolishness.

Sometimes we just take ourselves too seriously when we give out prophetic words or advice.

It is interesting to note that the word haval for vanity has a numerical value of 37.

A prophetic word also has a numerical value of 37.

If you ever feel you have a word from the Lord for someone, it is best you first examine yourself to be sure you are not haval or deceived by the shadow of the Hei with the shadow of the Beth feelings of superiority and the Lamed self-importance.

If you don’t do that self-examination you may end up like the Talmud warns and Jesus Himself reaffirmed that if you point out the splinter in someone else’s eye, they may turn around and point to the beam in your own eye.

Why would you focus on the flaw in someone else’s life and fail to notice the glaring flaws of your own?

MATTHEW 7:3-5 TPT

How could you say to your friend, ‘Let me show you where you’re wrong,’ when you’re guilty of even more?

You’re being hypercritical and a hypocrite!

First acknowledge and deal with your own ‘blind spots,’ and then you’ll be capable of dealing with the ‘blind spot’ of your friend.

1 CORINTHIANS 2:9-11 NKJV

But as it is written: “EYE has not SEEN, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.

For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?

Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

Where my eye and ear is limited in this realm, by the Spirit of God in me, I can ‘CHAZAH’, explore, reveal, examine, reverence and awe, affectionately recognize and discern.

Ponder the divine counsels, the immeasurable, and the hidden things that He has opened to those who desire.

Every child of God has been given a desire to know, to search,

to ask etc.

It is in our very DNA as born again sons and daughters of God.

Life has a way through many avenues to try to stop us and challenge that child likeness to journey into the deep unto deep.

How are you doing on your journey?

Holy Spirit loves to reveal and search, not only the hidden things of God but also your spirit.

He wants to open you up to the transcendent wonders of all that He is.

It takes one step to begin a 1000 mile journey.

Keep on the journey by abiding in Him.

Let's  CHAZAH for now.......

If you abide in Me, and My Words abide in you.

His Word must stay there.

Stay in Me and My Word stays in you, than you will ask what you will and it shall be done for you. You will ask according to His Word
