UNDERSTANDING THE MEANING OF JEHOVAH EL QANNA יהוה אל קנּא -[Sermon Note]

Pastor Stephanie

EXODUS 20:1-6 NIV

And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

EXODUS 20:1-6 NIV

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a JEALOUS GOD, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

H7067 JEALOUS

Original: קנּא

Transliteration: qannâ'

Phonetic: kan-naw'

jealous (only of God)

Qanna is translated as meaning jealous or zealous,

which reveals a unique attribute of God as Jehovah

Qanna–Jealous God.

Qanna is an adjective derived from qinah,

which is a Hebrew feminine noun used for meaning ardor

(a strong feeling of energy or eagerness), zeal, or jealousy.

It is affiliated with the color of one’s face as a result of deep emotion, as well as the jealousy of lovers and of rival peoples.

2 definitions of Jealous :-

Merriam-Webster’s definition of “jealous” is,

“Intolerant of rivalry or unfaithfulness,”

- “definition of jealous” is, “Feeling or showing envy

of someone or their accomplishments and advantages.”

Merriam-Webster’s definition assumes an already existing relationship.

A rivalry institutes competition between two parties, and one party apparently doesn’t like the competition.

Unfaithfulness assumes a commitment, a promise, a covenant to be broken.

The other definition assumes no relationship but instead assumes selfishness and envy towards what isn’t one’s own.

It craves something that is anticipated as fulfilling a need or want.

When understanding our God as Jehovah Qanna, it’s detrimental that we do not confuse these two definitions of jealousy.

Merriam-Webster’s definition follows the reaction of God in places in Exodus 34:14 -

"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose NAME is JEALOUS, is a JEALOUS GOD:"

Here God is renewing His covenant with Israel, who just worshipped a heap of gold they fashioned into a calf in place of Him, Jehovah Qanna.

He addresses them in regards to their recent behavior and the idolatrous culture around them,

“You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their Ashram [objects resembling another God] for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose NAME is JEALOUS, is a JEALOUS GOD.”

God is intolerant of idolatry and will not share worship with something lesser than Himself. For Him to allow worship like this wouldn’t be liberty for the believer but, instead, slavery.

God desires for all to come to repentance and find complete and utter joy where completeness and salvation is exclusively found: Himself.

When we see the value of the word of God, we get the wisdom of God.

Live prosperous. Live freely.

He wants us to have complete rest, joy, peace, fullness etc.

Nothing else in this world can give us that.

Sin represents slavery.

Results of sin is slavery.

Real independence is no need to depend on ourselves.

Jealousy has a connotation within our culture that is most often negative, and indeed, when jealousy is felt by us, it’s mostly rendered from selfish sin.

Jealousy is most affiliated with an over-possessive dating relationship or an envious colleague wanting attention or an accomplishment that they’re not receiving.

God’s version of jealousy

JESUS: A JEALOUS SAVIOR

The exclusivity of biblical Christianity is a result of the jealousy of God.

No one in this world can ever give us what God gave us through Jesus Christ.

No one can give us the eternal peace and joy that Jesus gives.

DEUTERONOMY 4:23-24 NIV

Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden.

For the Lord your God is a CONSUMING FIRE, a JEALOUS GOD.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:1-2 TPT

Brothers and sisters, when I was with you I found it impossible to speak to you as those who are spiritually mature people, for you are still dominated by the mind-set of the flesh. And because you are IMMATURE INFANTS in Christ, I had to nurse you and feed you with “milk,” not with the solid food of more advanced teachings, because you weren’t ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready to be fed solid food,

Have dominion over the flesh.

Christ has given us the ability to overcome our flesh.

Jesus is the only one who can give us what we are looking for.

Begin to believe the Word of God.

Died with Christ and buried with Him.

Don't look at the bible as a religious book.

The Word of God is alive.

We are all building a spiritual house.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:12-13 TPT

The quality of materials used by anyone building on this foundation will soon be made apparent, whether it has been built with gold, silver, and costly stones, or wood, hay, and straw.

Their WORK will soon become evident, for the Day will make it clear, because it will be revealed by BLAZING FIRE!

And the FIRE will test and prove the WORKMANSHIP of each BUILDER.

Gold represents divine nature of God.

New nature coming out from us when we serve the Lord.

We serve God with the fruits of the spirit.

Fruits of the spirit and gifts of the spirit through the gold and silver will last.

This year Pei Gimel is a year of recompense.

A year of judgement for those who go against God.

Enjoy the goodness of God.

Won't be taken away by the idols or whatever we put before God.

A life that God wants us to have with Him.

HEBREWS 12:23 TPT

And as members of the church of the Firstborn all our names have been legally registered as citizens of heaven!

And we have come before God who judges all, and who lives among the spirits of the righteous who have been made perfect in his eyes!

Know our legal rights in Christ.

Judgement day is coming.

Instead of being judged, we have the judgement seat of Christ where there will be rewards for those who serve Him.

HEBREWS 12:25 TPT

MAKE VERY SURE that you NEVER REFUSE to LISTEN to GOD WHEN HE SPEAKS!

For THE GOD who SPOKE on earth from SINAI is the SAME GOD who NOW SPEAKS from HEAVEN.

Those who heard him speak his living Word on earth found nowhere to hide, so what chance is there for us to escape if we turn our backs on God and refuse to hear his warnings as HE SPEAKS from HEAVEN?

Holy Spirit can fill us up whenever we are.

God shake out all the insecurities through the Holy Spirit by His Word.

HEBREWS 12:28-29 TPT

Since we are RECEIVING our RIGHTS to an unshakable kingdom we should be EXTREMELY THANKFUL and OFFER God the PUREST WORSHIP that delights his heart as we LAY DOWN our LIVES in ABSOLUTE SURRENDER, FILLED with AWE.

For OUR GOD is a HOLY, devouring (CONSUMING) FIRE!

How do we tell God that we are grateful? By laying down our lives.
